How to write epicene in 50 minutes
Do you have 50 minutes to spare? You’re about to learn how to write inclusively!
In June 2021, the Université de Montréal is releasing a MOOC that will teach you how to write inclusively in 50 minutes.
A MOOC is a free online training course open to all, and is an acronym of the English MOOC (massive open online course).
What epicene writing really means is a bit vague. Is it the version with the midpoint? Or is it the version with the hyphen? Or is it the version with letters in brackets?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this course is for you!
Epicene writing is a writing practice recommended by the OQLF since 1970 (!). It aims to ensure a balanced representation of men and women in texts. When referring to people, it uses coordinated feminine and masculine designations, neutral phrasing and, sparingly, the generic masculine.
The training objectives are as follows:
- Apply the principles of inclusive writing in a professional context.
- Use the correct forms of masculine and feminine designations of persons, in writing and orally.
- Use appropriate writing processes.
- Produce varied, clear and concise texts.
Warning: Although this training is relevant, it could be judged as not going far enough. We recommend that you find out more about the concept of inclusive writing and why it is necessary for many people!
